My mother's side of the family is very large, and close knit. She's one of seven children, all of which have between three and six children. I cannot recall from youth having gone more than a week without seeing all of my aunts, uncles and cousins. My father's side of the family is a different story all together. He has one full sister, and my grandmother passed away while my father was in his teens. A few years after she had passed, my grandfather remarried a considerably younger woman. Apparently, this caused a rift with my father, who had just been drafted into the Army at the beginning of the Vietnam war. While he was overseas, my grandfather had one more child with his new wife, a daughter... Aunt Angela.
When he finally made it back to the states, my father moved to Detroit as opposed to returning to his hometown in Alabama. He met my mother, and in short order, they were married and began their own family which consisted of my two older brothers and myself. My oldest brother is just over 5 years younger than Aunt Angela. Years passed without any contact between my father and grandfather. Long after I was born, something occurred that made them reconcile. Suddenly I found myself taking trips to Alabama during the summer time to see my grandfather. As the saying goes, "out of sight, out of mind". Years passed, and I enlisted in the Marines at the onset of the first Gulf War. Military life suited me, and I reenlisted twice for a total of 12 years of service. I'm not the type to constantly call home, write letters, or waste my leave time going places I've already been. Instead, I would travel through Europe and Asia, seeing what the world had to offer that Southeast Michigan didn't, (quite a lot as it turns out). The only person in my family that I kept in constant contact with, was my oldest brother. He liked to travel too, and several times we met up with each other to vacation in foreign countries. Eventually however, I did return to Michigan. I got myself a modest apartment, a cakewalk job, and enrolled in college to further my education.
One day in 2015, I received a text message from my oldest brother. The message stated that our Aunt Angela and move to Michigan not far from where I live. My first thought was Aunt who? It had been decades since I had seen her or even thought about her. He laughed about that, and knowing how poor I am at keeping in touch with family, he forwarded her cell number stating that if I wanted to contact her ...
